Background
RELAYTO
RELAYTO is the #1 cloud platform used to automatically transform static content into interactive microsites that can be easily analyzed and optimized.
I joined as a Design Intern and was soon tasked to complete a UX Research project pertaining to the Analytics feature. The analytics feature was rudimentary at the time and from a glance, had several user experience issues. Because RELAYTO documents are meant to be interactive experiences, analytics are crucial for creators. Analytics help understand how users interact with the content, measure the effectiveness of interactive content, and much more. Due to the importance of analytics, this project was a high priority.
Goals
Research Objectives
The ultimate goal of my project is to get a better understanding of the frustrations when using the analytics page. With the insights gathered, I would relay the information along with my design solutions to my team lead and the head of the design team.
Methodology
Research Methods
Using Zoom, my partner Marija and I conducted 4 moderated usability tests with RELAYTO interns who have little to no experience with the analytics feature. Ensuring that the interviewees have no experience is crucial because it allows us to see firsthand how new users utilize the product. If our interviewees were to run into frustrations, we can assume that other new users will also encounter these usability issues.
Precursor
Heuristics Evaluation
Before starting the usability testing, we did our own initial heuristics evaluation of the analytics pages. We found many different user experience issues that include: inconsistent copy, accessibility issues pertaining to WCAG guidelines, and more.
In our initial evaluation, Marija and I found many violations of the usability heuristics but the ones that seemed most prominent were the ones violating consistency and standards, and match between the system and the real world.
Process
Usability Test
In our usability study, we aimed to get insight on all of the different tabs in the analytics section. In the beginning, that proved to be a little difficult due to time constraints but we were able to get insight on all of the pages with strategic prompts and guidance. Our usability studies usually lasted between 30 to 45 minutes and consisted of 5 sections:
Sharing & Privacy
Analytics (Overview)
Analytics (By Page)
Analytics (People)

Insights
Findings
With the help of these usability tests, I was able to discover a lot of improvements that could be made. There were usability issues that could be found on basically every page. These issues ranged from basic accessibility issues, confusing text, to permissions hierarchy being unclear.
My Ideas
Design Recommendations
My design recommendations are all about creating user-friendly, visually appealing solutions that work well and support the project’s goals. I focus on making designs intuitive and engaging, while keeping things aligned with the bigger picture. I tried to ensure that my designs adhered to the design system while also being simplistic.
Analytics Page - Overview
Several users pointed out that the homepage did the job but it could be made a lot more appealing. There was a lack of color and some pointed out that it was lacking information like whether or not the analytics are trending upwards or downwards. I took that feedback and chose to add trend arrows that indicated the trajectory of the analytics.
Users also pointed out that there was a lack of data visualization like charts/graphs. When RELAYTO eventually decides to add those on the homepage, I designed a simple CTA to click on to customize their homepage.

Analytics Page - Interactions
There are many issues that will arise with this page in particular. One big issue with this page is the scalability. This document for example only has 13 pages but, what if the document has 50+ pages? Also, there are a lot of issues internally that affect how these interactions get named on this page.
Based off data gathered from the usability tests, our users had a lot of trouble reading and understanding the information that is being shown due to spacing and hierarchy. With my redesign, I tried to incorporate more of Gestalt’s Principles to make the popup easier to read.
